About: Sashi Adopts a Brother is a children’s picture book written by Linda Greiner and illustrated by Morgan Spicer. It was published on 10/1/2015 by Brown Books Kids, hardcover, 40 pages. This book is for ages 3 to 10, grades P to 4. There are 3 books to this series: book 1 is called Sashi the Scared Little Sheltie, book 2 is called Sashi Adopts a Brother, and book 3 is called Sashi and the Puppy Mill Girl. My Experience: I read Sashi Adopts a Brother for my 5 year-old son as his bedtime story on 1/25/17 and finished it that same night. We read it again the next night on 1/26/17. Again, we both loved this book. This book continues the story with Sashi and her new adoptive family. Her new family decided to work at a Shetland Sheepdog (aka Sheltie) Rescue center, which is an organization of volunteers who provide a temporary foster homes for these Shelties until they are adopted. Sashi being the only Sheltie in the family, she has to learn to get along with her new foster brothers and sisters.

It’s great to meet different Shelties that ended up at the foster home. One was due to his owner moving away and couldn’t bring him with and another was because the owner has allergies and have to give her up. My son and I like that with each new Sheltie that arrives at the foster home of Sashi’s new adoptive family, we get to learn who adopted them. One Sheltie named Charlie was adopted by a family who trained him to be a therapy dog and he visits the hospitals to help patients feel better.

Along the way, Sashi met a new Sheltie named Buddy. She gets along with him very well and loves to run around the house and chase each other up and down the stairs. Sashi’s adoptive family took Buddy to meet his new potential families but he does things to make the new families afraid to adopt him. At last, Sashi’s adoptive family realized that Sashi just wanted a little brother of her own. This book is really a great read for kids. It teaches them what dogs can do, either help patients feel better at hospitals or escort customers to the registers. It opens their minds to the welfare of animals and what people do to make sure all animals can have a happy home.

Pro: Illustration, adoption, friendship, helping others, meeting someone new

Con: didn’t mention about Sashi learning to share her toys

About the Author:

Linda Greiner fell in love with Shelties when doing research on what type of dog to get for her sixteenth birthday. Many years later she decided to adopt instead of buying from a breeder and contacted the Shetland Sheepdog Placement Services of New Jersey. Sashi was her first experience with a severely traumatized dog. With love, patience, positive reinforcement training, and the Rescue’s support, they were able to overcome Sashi’s problem behaviors.

Linda started fostering for SSPSNJ in 2003. Each dog has had a tale to tell. She is currently working on a new book and plans to create a series about Sashi and the rescues they have known and loved. A portion of the proceeds from Sashi, the Scared Little Sheltie and Sashi Adopts a Brother will benefit Sheltie Rescue.
