Synopsis from Edelweiss:
In this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect. Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.
When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.
About: By Your Side is a fiction novel written by Kasie West. It will be published on 1/31/2017 by Harper Teen, 352 pages. The genres are young adult, contemporary, and romance. This author has written many other popular books that I can’t wait to read: P.S. I Like You, The Fill-In Boyfriend, On the Fence, The Distance Between Us, and more.
My Experience: I started reading By Your Side on 1/12/17 and finished it on 1/18/17. This book is absolutely a fun read. This is my first read by Kasie West and this author is becoming one of my favorite contemporary writer. I really can’t wait to read all of her other books. This book is easy going and full of humor. The characters in this book are all great and the plot flows perfectly. There’s hardly a dull moment when reading this book.
I wished I didn’t care what people thought about me. “Why don’t you care?”
“What?”
“What people think about you?”
“Because I have no say in what other people do .. or think.” 34%
The main character is Autumn and she’s such a sweetheart. I like following her train of thoughts. She’s very relatable. I like her positive thinking and how she treats other people. I like how she eats her half of an apple and give the other half to Dax. I like the romance because it’s not instantaneous. Autumn’s family is great, especially her dad and his slogan.. haha..
All of the characters in this book are likable, except Jeff’s mom. I don’t like how she brush off Jeff’s other friends. Dax and his hard earned smile is cute. I like that despite his situation, he’s actually a caring person. It would have been good to read his point of views, but the book is still good without. One thing I still don’t know how to interpret is whether he gets good grades in school because he reads Hamlet but he doesn’t go to class. He may not be as smart as Autumn because she’s the one that found the food and the bell tower. Since the story takes place in high school, I feel the grades should at least win a small mention in this book.
The main plot of this book is Autumn accidently got stuck in the public library and whether she will be rescued. Yet, Autumn don’t seem to like to read much. Dax seems to always be reading but he doesn’t discuss anything about his books, especially why he carries around the Hamlet book. Even all of their fun games, there’s no book related games. If not look too closely in this angle, the book overall is a fun light-hearted read. I do like reading this book and find myself smiling often.
Pro: humor, family, positive thinking, light-hearted, fast-paced, page-turner, witty, easy going,
Con: stuck in a library but no favorite book discussions? what?!
I rate it 4.5 stars!

Your con had me cracking up 😂😂! You would think that since they’re stuck in a library books would be discussed lol. That aside I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed this book. I’ve only read one book by Kasie West so far and that is P.S. I Like You (which I highly recommend) but I definitely want to read the rest of her books too. I’m especially excited for this one. I hope I end up enjoying it as much as you did. Great review, Jasmine! 💕😊

Have you read any books from other authors like Kasie West? I think maybe Sophie Kinsella is similar, especially her Shopaholic book 1. It’s pretty light hearted and fun too.

Sarah Dessen’s a bit similar to her. They both write fantastic YA contemporaries. Also, possibly Jandy Nelson though her books can be more of a sad/happy mix. And maybe Huntley Fitzpatrick, if you haven’t read My Life Next Door and are looking for a fluffy contemporary I recommend that one big time. I’ve never read Sophie Kinsella’s books before but I’ll definitely have to look them up. 😊

Thanks for the recommendation Melissa! Sophie Kinsella, I like her Confession of a Shopaholic. Another blogger told me her favorite title is Can You Keep a Secret. You can check out those books when you get a chance 🙂

I got a hold of On The Fence from the library, so I will be able to read that book soon 🙂 Are there any other authors you know of that writes fun and cute books like Kasie West?

I LOVED On The Fence – and I wasn’t a big fan of The Distance Between Us although it seems to be everyone’s favorite. As for similar authors maybe Kody Keplinger to some extent ? And a new author Laurie Devore seems like she might be similar but I haven’t read her work yet

This is a lovely review. I haven’t read anything by Kasie West, but her books sound right up my alley. I am not a fan of insta-love and it sounds like we avoid that here. I will look into her books for sure.

It might still be available on Edelweiss. Do you request ARCs on there?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Nope, I’ve never even considered opening an Edelweiss account. With ARCs coming near and far from Netgalley and Indigo as well as the occasional author request, I don’t think I need more of a load on me.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hahaha Smart decision!! What is the contact at Indigo if you don’t mind my asking. I thought bookstore don’t give out ARCs for reviews. Unless I’m mistaken?

Thank you!☺️
I am in a VIP program- I first got in touch with them through a school project. I can definitely ask if I can give you their contact, though! And you’re right, they usually don’t, but Indigo has created a special program just for ARCs of YA books- I live in Canada so I don’t really know about any other stores.

They probably don’t ship to USA? Doesn’t hurt to ask I guess. But that’s very cool opportunity for you 😊 I think that’s better than Edelweiss. They take forever to approve. What was your school project? I didn’t read much back in school. I would like to but I feel guilty to take time away from school. I have had pressure to get decent grades.. haha
LikeLiked by 1 person
I will still ask just to confirm😊 and thank you so much!
And yeah, one reason I’ve stayed away from Edelweiss is because of what you’ve just said about it taking a long time to approve requests, and plus I heard it’s hard to use.
My school project was a passion project, which was to create a change for something I was passionate about, so I chose to showcase this blog! I had to choose a mentor as well, so I decided to take a leap and connect with Indigo CEO Heather Reisman, and to my luck, she was very enthusiastic and excited to lead me on with my journey!
Yes, I feel that pressure too…😳 but I still make time to read, haha!

oh that’s very neat! Your project must have turned out great! Also that’s big. I have never thought to do that in high school. 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to confirm with them.
