A Court of Thorns and Roses Review

About: A Court of Thorns and Roses is a fiction novel written by Sarah J. Maas. This book was published on 5/5/2015 by Bloomsbury Childrens, 416 pages. The genres are fantasy, young adult, romance, magic, retellings, fairy tales, etc. There will be 4 books in this series: book 1 is called A Court of Thorns and Roses, book 2 is called A Court of Mist and Fury,  book 3 is called A Court of Wings and Ruin, and book 4 is untitled.

My Experience: I started reading A Court of Thorns and Roses on 12/16/16 and finished it on 12/22/16 at 1AM. This book doesn’t hold my attention and interests as much as Hunted by Meagan Spooner. The retelling is the same but I am glad it’s a different read and besides the bows & arrows, the plot is different. This book definitely bend the rules for the young adult genre in the romance category. Since I am one of those adults that read YA books, I’m not really complaining. The characters and the plot are interesting. I think the book would have been better if there were more than one point of views. This book has actions, humor, and dull moments too. Since there’s only one point of view, I get tired of following Feyre’s thoughts after awhile.

Feyre is the youngest of 3 daughters of a merchant. Her dad lost the family’s fortune and Feyre was forced to provide for the family by hunting in the forest because no one else in her family can or willing to do it. The narration about the beast’s side is a bit farfetched. There are all kinds of monsters on the beast’s side of town. The different Courts are interesting, but the descriptions of some faeries are not and it gets too out there when more and more monsters are being introduced. I like the indirect way of Lucien’s help to hunt the Suriel. I like the humor in this book. I like some actions that forced Feyre to be smart and beat the challenge. Two events that stands out for me are the hunt for the Suriel and the worm. Other challenges were helped so it was not too exciting. Also, there’s no point in her getting drunk night after night in skimpy outfits because that first night of letting everyone know about Feyre’s bargain should already do justice. Her reading problems shouldn’t be a weakness because she has opportunity to learn but she didn’t take it so it’s worthless to point that out in one of the challenges. Feyre devoted so much time to painting which played no role in the challenges is worthless too. Overall, this book is an okay read and it doesn’t meet the hype.
