Hi Everyone!
Today I am super duper excited to announce that it’s the start of my first ever buddy read with Stephanie @ TEACHEROFYA!! and we are reading Gilded Cage! This is a fiction novel written by Vic James. Gilded Cage is book 1 in the Dark Gifts series. It will be published on 2/14/2017 by Del Rey Books, 368 pages.
What is Buddy Read? Megan at Book Slayer Reads wrote a post about it. Please click the link on her blog name to learn more about it! I am open to buddy read if anyone is interested! 🙂
Goodreads Synopsis:
Not all are free. Not all are equal. Not all will be saved.
Our world belongs to the Equals — aristocrats with magical gifts — and all commoners must serve them for ten years. But behind the gates of England’s grandest estate lies a power that could break the world.
A girl thirsts for love and knowledge.
Abi is a servant to England’s most powerful family, but her spirit is free. So when she falls for one of the noble-born sons, Abi faces a terrible choice. Uncovering the family’s secrets might win her liberty, but will her heart pay the price?
A boy dreams of revolution.
Abi’s brother, Luke, is enslaved in a brutal factory town. Far from his family and cruelly oppressed, he makes friends whose ideals could cost him everything. Now Luke has discovered there may be a power even greater than magic: revolution.
And an aristocrat will remake the world with his dark gifts.
He is a shadow in the glittering world of the Equals, with mysterious powers no one else understands. But will he liberate—or destroy?
About the Author:
She studied History and English at Merton College, Oxford where Tolkien was once professor. Relocating to Rome, she completed her doctorate in the Vatican Secret Archives (they’re nothing like The Da Vinci Code), then spent five years living in Tokyo where she learned Japanese and worked as a journalist. She now writes full time.
Vic has scuba-dived on Easter Island, camped at Everest Base Camp, voyaged on one of the last mailboats to St Helena, hang-glided across Rio de Janeiro, and swum the Hellespont from Europe to Asia. But there’s little she loves more than lying in bed till midday with a good book and a supply of her favourite biscuits.
***Disclaimer: I received this ebook for free via NetGalley in an exchanged for an honest review. Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an opportunity to read and review!
xoxo,
Jasmine

I love the idea of a buddy read! A great way to be exposed to works outside your traditionally preferred genre, but maybe with more intention and planning than in a classic book club where there are so many voices. Seems like if you find a good match, buddy reading could really improve the depth of your reading list.

We are sticking to the genre we like for now 😊 but it is easier to discuss with just the two of us.

I *love* buddy reads! I hope you get something great out of this, as well as enjoy the book. 🙂

I’m excited to hear what you think of this! I have an ARC of it waiting in my TBR pile and was planning on reading it soon. Hope you have fun with your buddy read!

Thanks! That’s cool that you have the ARC. I have heard many other bloggers has it too 😊

Yeah I managed to grab a copy at a convention which was pretty lucky, but I’ve seen loads of ARC reviews for this book, there must be a ton of ARCs out there haha! 😊

What convention is that? So you must have the paperback copy? Mine is ebook 😊 I have never been to any convention or festival or tours.. Did you document your experience on your blog?

It was the Young Adult Literature Convention in London and yeah it’s a paperback copy which is pretty exciting! This was my first book convention of any kind actually and I really enjoyed it. You should definitely go if you get the chance one day. 😊 Here’s the link to day 3 of my experience and there are links in it to the first two posts as well if you want to find out more: https://wordsandotherbeasts.wordpress.com/2016/07/31/day-3-yalc-arcs-and-advice/

I heard really great things about this book, it’s been around on twitter.
I’m curious how you’re going to like it!

I plan to request it later when my ratio gets a bit higher (it’s 64% now). I want to read it but Im know that if I request it now, I’ll be declined.
The book comes out in January so I hope if I request it in December, I won’t be too late, but we’ll see…

Congrats to 64%! I’m at 55% I can’t resist so many good library books that I haven’t been reading much ARCs. Have you had any luck with Edelweiss? No ratio there to worry about 😊

Is this book on Edelweiss?
Well, since our last talk about Edelweiss I sent 3 book requests and all of them are still pending, so I assume that’s not good news, especially since all the books are from HarperCollins Publishing and I already saw some bloggers feature those books in their Stucking the Shelves posts…

Edelweiss takes forever to approve so if no rejection could be good news. Disruption is from Edelweiss but Gilded Cage is from NetGalley. I think Edelweiss has it too. If both places has the same book, I tend to go through NetGalley, they approve quicker. 😊

I also prefer Netgalley, but you already know that. 🙂

This is an interesting concept. Ill have to try it someday. Enjoy your read Jasmine.
You read and review books before they are published?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Actually, we are supposed to read/review books at least 1 month before they are published. Also, depends on the publisher too. When they approve the ARC, they send you an email and they will indicate whether they want you to wait until near publishing date to review or not. I have updated my post to include a link from Megan where she explains in detail about the benefits of buddy reads.
