Castillo de San Marcos – St. Augustine

About: Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. It was built in 1672 by the Spanish when Florida was in Spanish possession. It is now a national monument in Florida. The Castillo de San Marcos was used for military purposes during WWII. The Coast Guard utilized the fort for training exercises and ceremonies throughout the war years.

My Experience: I have the opportunity to visit Castillo de San Marcos on 11/27/10 with my family. The stone monument has many canons pointing out toward you as you walk up the path to the monument. Every now and then they would fire a canon off to the distance, making a very loud bang. It was a bit chilly that day and we didn’t tour the inside of the Castillo de San Marcos. From outside, we can see that the monument is still very sturdy even though it was built more than 330 years ago.

Pros: stone benches to sit and view the lake, good to see some history

Cons: no bathrooms, entrance fee to tour the inside of the monument

I rate it 4 stars!
